Evelyn O’Doherty

Evelyn O’Doherty grew up in Westchester, New York while spending her summers on the East End of Long Island between Amagansett and Montauk. After graduating from Boston University, she settled full-time in the East End community. Evelyn taught in the public school systems on Long Island for 12+ years as a middle and high school English Language Arts teacher, during which time, she received her graduate degree in Educational Technology and learned to surf. The surfing bug bit, and hard. Soon after finding herself checking the wave forecast more often than her grade book, she left her teaching career to spend more time closely connected to the ocean and has never looked back.
Her love of the ocean, its people and environs has propelled Evelyn into a whole new career path as Editor-in-Chief for a quarterly, global watersports magazine called Session Magazine, previously known as Standup Journal where she acted as Publisher, Online Editor and Feature Writer. She has also published articles for The Inertia, APP World Tour and Samata Magazine. As Editor for Session Magazine, Evelyn curates, collaborates and cultivates high quality content over a wide array of watersports including:  big wave surfing, adventure stand up paddling, wing foiling, downwind foiling, endurance swimming, and more. Her passion for her work, her commitment to excellence and her ability to pull a story out of just about anyone amplifies Session Magazine with her knowledgeable and experienced voice within the surf media industry.
Evelyn O’Doherty currently has over 15 years in the watersports space and has traveled extensively with the APP World Tour (stand up paddling world tour) where she hosted live beach broadcasts, athlete interviews and wrote daily recaps. She is an ISA certified surf judge, Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG) training graduate, has raced competitively in stand up paddling both nationally and internationally. She surfs in Montauk year-round and is involved with several local and national non-profits connected to preserving our ocean’s health and future.  Evelyn also hosts a podcast through Session Magazine, called “On Water” where she interviews a wide array of water athletes, entrepreneurs, scientists and artists about their connection to water.
